MATHEMATICS PROGRAM | Grade 6

TOPICS  OVERVIEW

(blue = basic skill completed)

Patterns in Mathematics Use models and tables to represent patterns, identify, extend, and create patterns, analyze, represent and describe patterns, use patterns to solve problems

Numeration Read, write, compare numbers beyond 100 000 – rename large numbers – communicate solutions to problems – read, write estimate and compare decimal thousandths

Addition and Subtraction Use mental math and pencil and paper to add and subtract whole and decimal numbers – estimate sums and differences of whole and decimal numbers – use addition and subtraction to solve problems

Multiplication and Division Identify prime numbers, composite numbers, factors, and multiples – calculate products and quotients using mental math – multiply and divide by two-digit numbers – pose and solve problems using multiplication and division investigate the effects of the order of operations

Fractions, Decimals, Ratios, and Percents Relate and compare fractions, decimals, and percents – identify, model, and apply ratios in various situations – represent relationships using unit rates – solve problems using a guess and test strategy.

Measuring Length Choose, use, and rename metric length measurements – measure perimeters of polygons – solve problems using diagrams and graphs

2-D Geometry Describe properties of triangles and quadrilaterals – construct polygons using measurement tools – sort polygons according to line symmetry and other properties – communicate about polygons

Area Identify relationships between and among linear and square metric units – express area measures using more than one unit – develop and use rules for calculating the areas of parallelograms and triangles

Multiplying decimals Estimate products involving decimals and explain your strategies – multiply decimals by 10, 100, and 1 000 using mental math – multiply whole numbers by numbers with one decimal place – multiply whole numbers by 0.1, 0.01, and 0.0001 – select an appropriate multiplication method

Dividing decimals Estimate the quotient when dividing a decimal – divide whole numbers and decimals by whole numbers – use division & other operations to solve multi-step problems

3D Geometry Determine the surface area of polyhedrons – estimate, measure, and calculate the volume of rectangular and triangular prisms

Data Management Collect, organize, and analyze the results of a survey, make bar graphs, line graphs, and scatter plots, use mean and median to compare sets of data, describe how changing the scale or interval size affects the appearance of a graph – use data to make arguments

Probability Conduct probability experiments – describe probabilities using fractions and percents – solve probability problems using probability – compare theoretical and experimental probability
