Schoolboys – do you want to make money during your holidays?

This page is from the Montreal newspaper The Daily World. It appeared in 1926.  Do you think this ad conveys the same feeling and ideas as the artwork in the  Money Makers post? Are they talking about the same thing?

  1. It connects with the other picture because they make children work. The only difference is that the children are free. The other picture the guy is not free.

    • You make an important distinction, Z.P. Although we’re not sure that the boy in the other picture is not free, we certainly get that feeling because it’s hard to imagine that someone would choose to be pulling a wagon like that.

  2. This newspaper is similar to the other picture with the guy and the skeleton cause on this news paper they want school kids to sell news paper for money on the other picture is the opposite there forcing kids to overwork and that when they finish work they have to give there money that they worked for to there moneymaker or masters so this is why its very similar to the other picture.

  3. Lots of people ARE going to buy lots of newspapers because it is 2 cents. They are also going to buy newspaper because now they cost a pretty pennie. The main idea is “Newspapers.”

    • I would agree that the topic of this image is “newspapers”, but if you think about the “Moneymakers” drawing and this one at the same time then you can also focus on the idea that they have in common. Especially if you also think about the children in our recent novels (Iqbal and Parvana).

  4. I believe they are not the same because you can see here that they have a boss and are making money, other than the Money Maker post the child is getting abused and in this picture the work men arnt getting abused. Also they ask them to come for work and they do not get hurt while doing the work or getting abused if they dont do the work.

    • Very good points, J.L.H.
The two images seem to be about the same general topic but there are also important differences.
You’re really learning to look “below the surface”. You’re not just a “black and white” thinker.

  5. This ad is kind of forcing children to sell newspapers and maybe the company owners will not pay the children. I think they are not using adult because children because they are more innocent and they will give there money for any cause.

  6. I think it’s not the same feeling because In the other post the child was forced to do the work for the master and in this one the news paper is offering the people to work for them.

    • You make a significant point, M.H.
It seems that in one case there is free choice and in the other there is not.
Also, in the case of the Moneymakers it looks like it is a full time job so the boy would probably not be getting an education, whereas in this ad the company is offering jobs for the holiday period.

  7. I think the newspaper forces abit the children to work for them and I think that if the news paper is sell for 2 cents and they will need to make money they will lose more money than they will make some.I think that these people trys to trick the childre by saying the first dozen is free so its like well less meen than child labour but still meen. : (

  8. J.V.,
one thing I’d like to say, in case you don’t know, is that in 1926, two cents was worth much more than it is now. The message in the ad is that the boys won’t have much trouble selling the newspapers because at only two cents it is a very good deal.
The way this worked was that the boy bought the newspaper for a certain price – for instance, one cent – and then resold it at two cents, and kept the difference for himself. The difference would be what we call ‘profit’.
However, you do raise some good points in that giving them the first newspapers for free might be a way of tricking the children into a difficult situation. You have what is called a “skeptical” mind, J.V. That’s not a bad thing!

  9. This isn’t a right thing for them to make money
